The 5 Email Marketing Strategies That Took My Subscription Business to the Next Level

The 5 Email Marketing Strategies That Took My Subscription Business to the Next Level

When we first started BusterBox I was the writing guy.

Emails, blogs and newsletters were my thing.

I wasn’t particularly gifted or anything

I guess I was alright at words in high school but that was the gist of my qualifications haha

So in the first couple of years in business I would spend so much time writing

Blog articles

eBooks

Newsletters

I hated newsletters (I see the irony of typing this for my newsletter 😆)

Here’s why I hated them…

I was wasting 3+ hours per day writing the newsletter

At the end of the day, week and month

Our subscribers hadn’t moved

I had done all that work

For 0 sales

Now…

Fast forward a few years

We’ve gone from that

To generating $3M in recurring sales through email marketing

Sounds like a dream, right?

Now I’m spending 60 minutes or less per week on writing for BusterBox

Yet signing up 400 subscribers+ month for my subscription business

(No luck or sneaky tricks needed to replicate it)

You may be like me in 2016

I saw email as a channel to communicate and keep people updated

I knew it could be used to sell – But I had no idea how to actually do that

One thing that always irked me too

So I’d write newsletter after newsletter, then wait for the moment to ‘sell’

When I plucked up the courage to write an email that asked people to buy

They usually didn’t

Thankfully almost 8 years of online business have taught me some lessons

So let me share them with you today…

Here’s how to turn your email list into a viable sales channel for your subscription business

If you’ve ever screamed

“When I send emails, people don’t buy!”

Buddy, I got you covered

Today I’ll show you the 5 things you need to get sales from your emails right now 👇

  1. Fresh Leads

Is your email list full of stale leads from a giveaway you ran 3 years ago?

If so, you’ve got a lot of freebie hunters who may never buy from you

You need to fill your list full of fresh leads with buying intent

How?

Simply build a 5-6 question flow with the email capture on step 3 or 4,

Send the leads to your email provider if they don’t complete checkout

You can see this in action on our website BusterBox.com

2. A Killer offer

When marketing your subscription, the likeliest place you’ll fall down is creating good offers.

Here’s my top tip on offers, go aggressive first and see what gets people signing up.

Then work from there to manage profitability while maintaining growth.

Some examples of offers:

A free gift with your first box

Double your first box for free

Free upgraded box (extra products in each box)

Discounts

You can also combine the offers in order to find the one that converts best

3. Create Well Designed Emails

You need:

A basic understanding of Canva or Snappa

An offer-centric email (Get this offer TODAY)

High-quality imagery of your box

Bright colours

A strong CTA – CLAIM OFFER works great

Social proof images of customers using your box

Try it

4. Automate the follow-up

Set up a 4-day abandoned cart sequence with 4 emails re-stating the offer

Remind them of the offer

Show them exactly what they’ll get and why its valuable

Show off social proof

Add some urgency in email 4

Pro tip: automatically segment people out when they become a customer to avoid angry replies

5. Send broadcast emails 2x weekly

If someone didn’t buy from your automation – it just wasn’t the right time yet

The beauty of email is you can keep trying now, for free!

Send 2 weekly emails with new offers & special deals

Make them sales emails – because that’s what sells

Conclusion

The 5 critical things you need to get sales from your emails are:

  1. Fresh Leads
  2. A Killer offer
  3. Well designed emails
  4. Automated Follow up
  5. Regular broadcasts
